Opinion Redesigning America's Flag: Six New Takes on Old Glory The New York Times

american flag design

The American flag is a potent piece of national iconography, but its design shifted frequently until the early 1900s. Some are functional designs, others artistic renderings; some represent America as it could be, others how the artist sees the country now. Nevertheless, Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo were launched and landed vertically instead of horizontally as the Space Shuttle did on its landing approach, so the streaming convention was not followed. These flags were oriented with the stripes running horizontally, perpendicular to the direction of flight. The Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress passed a Flag Resolution on June 14, 1777, establishing the first congressional description of official United States ensigns. The shape and arrangement of the stars is not mentioned – there were variations – but the legal description legitimized the Ross flag and similar designs.

Stars

Since 1963, the Philadelphia 76ers have used the distinctive ring of 13 5-pointed stars in their team logo,[67] as a reference to Philadelphia as the first United States capital, where the Declaration of Independence was signed and where Betsy Ross worked. Starting in 1819, the updated flag becomes legal on the Fourth of July following the date of admission. Get HISTORY’s most fascinating stories delivered to your inbox three times a week. Canby’s claim (which was supported by affidavits from Ross’s daughter, niece and granddaughter) was published in “Harper’s New Monthly Magazine” in 1873 and soon became part of the United States history curriculum taught to millions of elementary-aged school children every year.

Redesigning America’s Flag

Heft’s mother was an avid seamstress, though she refused to help her son with the project. Instead, Heft was forced to design the new American flag on his own. Shortly after submitting his design to Congress, it was selected to replace the previous American flag design. Since then, Congress has continued to recognize Heft’s design as the official American flag.

History

The American flag flies at half-staff or at half-mast when the country or a state is in mourning. The president, a state governor, or the mayor of the District of Columbia can order flags to fly at half-staff. June 14th is celebrated as Flag Day because of this resolution. Since the resolution did not specify the arrangements of the stars, flags exist with a variety of “constellations.” The “Betsy Ross” flag arranges the stars in a circular pattern.

You can find more of them at the Eisenhower Presidential Library. The following year, on June 14, 1777, Congress officially adopted the Stars and Stripes as the national flag. Ross did run a successful upholstery shop, but evidence suggests founding father Francis Hopkinson created the stars and stripes. It remains unknown why this particular color combination was selected, though some have speculated that red might represent valor, white may symbolize purity, and blue might represent justice. The United States was just a few weeks shy of celebrating its one-year anniversary when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution establishing an official flag for the nation in 1777. And while Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross is widely known as the person who made the American flag, this claim is starkly unfounded.

In this flag, the familiar symbolism falls out of focus, giving way to something ambiguous, vague and difficult to define.

Did Betsy Ross Really Make the First American Flag?

Colonel William Moultrie commissioned "The Moultrie Flag" in 1775 to prepare for war with Great Britain. It depicts a white crescent moon with the word “LIBERTY” inscribed within it on a field of navy blue. It was flown during the American victory at the Battle of Sullivan’s Island in June 1776.

On Memorial Day, it is common to place small flags by war memorials and next to the graves of U.S. war veterans. Also, on Memorial Day, it is common to fly the flag at half staff until noon to remember those who lost their lives fighting in U.S. wars. Both the stripes (barry) and the stars (mullets) have precedents in classical heraldry. However, an example of mullets representing territorial divisions predating the U.S. flag is the Valais 1618 coat of arms, where seven mullets stood for seven districts.

To learn more about it and who was responsible for designing it, keep reading. Though Heft died in 2009, he’s got us covered if more states are added to the union—it’s said he received patents for several other flag designs, including 51-star and 60-star designs. In 1960, Heft’s 50-star American flag was officially displayed for the first time at Fort Henry in Baltimore, Maryland. This ushered in a new era in which the United States would begin to display the 50 embroidered star, stitched stripes American flag rather than the earlier flag variant with fewer stars.

During the American Civil War, the Confederate States of America began to use its first flag, the Stars and Bars, on March 5, 1861. The design of the Stars and Bars varied over the following two years. On May 1, 1863, the Confederacy adopted its first official national flag, often called the Stainless Banner. A modification of that design was adopted on March 4, 1865, about a month before the end of the war. In the latter part of the 20th century, many groups in the South challenged the practice of flying the Confederate Battle Flag on public buildings, including some state capitols. Proponents of the tradition argued that the flag recalled Southern heritage and wartime sacrifice, whereas opponents saw it as a symbol of racism and slavery, inappropriate for official display.

The first “official” American flag was actually created in June 1775, and it was known as the Continental Colors or the Grand Union Flag. Much like today’s flag, it boasted 13 red and white alternating stripes to represent the 13 original colonies. The current American flag was designed by a 17-year-old high school student named Robert Heft in 1958. For a school project, Robert Heft was tasked with designing a new version of the American flag. Heft’s design consisted of 13 stripes and 50 stars — a familiar and iconic design that has been used to represent the American flag ever since. In this resolution, two new stars and two more stripes were added to the design, which symbolized the addition of Vermont and Kentucky into the Union.

The tale first gained prominence in 1870 when Ross’ grandson William Canby presented family affidavits as evidence during a lecture at the Pennsylvania Historical Society. Then 22 years later, artist Charles Weisberger used testimony from Ross’ daughters to create a now-famous painting of their mother and Washington. However, some of Hopkinson’s most important contributions were as a statesman.

Take a trip to Mountain Top, overlooking Magens Bay, and try to identify the 15 hilly islands you can see from here. Take a picnic to serene Smith Bay Beach, or join a guided culinary tour of Charlotte Amalie to taste authentic Caribbean flavors.

Nightlife

We think our detour was due to being the last excursion of the day. RockStars get the first access to book restaurants and experiences and are moved to the front of the line for any shows that do not require reservations. Considering the booking window opens 45 days before the sailing date, and that passengers in the know set their alarms to begin booking as soon as the app launches, this first access alone can be worth its weight. Of course, a sea day wouldn’t be a sea day without a visit to the spa, and Valiant Lady offered an easy and inexpensive way to enjoy the spa with its Thermal Suite Pass. For two hours, we could take advantage of Redemption Spa’s steam room, sauna, salt therapy room, mud bath room, hot and cold plunge pools, and heated Turkish marble lounges. When my best friend suggested we needed some one-on-one girl time, we knew we wanted to spend a week in the Caribbean sun and escape winter’s wrath.

Of the ship’s additional restaurants, we loved Pink Agave’s taste of Mexico through tlayuds, memelas, sopes, tortas, esquites, and tamales, but were less impressed by Test Kitchen. The ship’s food court-styled dining, found on Deck 15, was nothing like a traditional food court.

From crispy artichokes with caper aioli and charred lemon aperitivo to the secondo porcini-rubbed New York Strip with Calabrian chili butter, farro and sauteed escarole, we raved about every bite. We weren’t the only ones who loved this spot; every passenger we spoke to said it was their favorite, and we failed to secure a second reservation due to its popularity. We had decided to make our vacay a week of self-improvement, promising to partake in the ship’s more than 100 free exercise classes.

Always one to enjoy Sir Richard Branson’s hotels and airlines, a trip aboard the Valiant Lady seemed like an ideal match. Stop by the visitor center for the most current information on snorkeling. Hurricane Irma passed over the Virgin Islands in September 2017 and destroyed a huge chunk of the national park in St. John. Before planning to hike or embark on any activity along a beach or in the wilderness, be sure to check with the National Park Service on what's open and safe. Some restaurants and beach concessions are still working to come back, a year later.

Virgin Islands, you’ll get to dive into the deep blue waters around St. Croix, where you can swim with sea turtles and explore colorful coral reefs. Spend the day in Charlotte Amalie, known for its Danish colonial architecture and duty-free shopping,  and hike to the top of Skyline Drive for incredible views. Enjoy a rum tasting on St. Thomas before you spend the afternoon relaxing on the sands at Magens Bay Beach. No matter when you visit, a blissful luxury vacation awaits on one of our U.S. Virgin Islands, you can swim among sea turtles and explore colorful coral reefs. We, and the people we met on board, laughed at those exaggerated stories. Ready to make Virgin Islands National Park a part of your Caribbean vacations? The U.S. dollar is used throughout the Virgin Islands, including St. John, but foreign currency can be exchanged at major banks; an ATM is located in First Bank, two blocks north of the ferry dock. There’s no shortage of interesting dive shops in either Christiansted or Frederiksted. But the best places to shop in St Croix are the duty-free shops offering jewellery, spirits, clothing and souvenirs. It’s about a half-hour drive from Christiansted, but well worth the journey – once you arrive at the rocky bluff, you can wander up a paved road to the overlook for the best views on the island.

Novice divers can take their first plunge in the warm, clear waters off Virgin Gorda, while families will love the underwater snorkeling trail at pretty Trunk Bay on St. John. We were told he always greets his ships when he’s on the island, sometimes with fireworks. It all started back in 1956, when businessman and conservationist Laurance Rockefeller, who had bought extensive land holdings on St. John, opened the low-key but luxurious Caneel Bay Resort.

Embark on a spectacular eight-night voyage through the Caribbean featuring a day in Puerto Plata, a late-night stay in San Juan, and a visit to St. Croix. After 3 days of indulging in the (very) good life on board, you'll sail to The Beach Club at Bimini to revel in our private beach club experience. The U.S. Virgin Islands are home to hundreds of species of beautiful tropical fish like angelfish, parrotfish, and blue tang, which make for great underwater viewing.

Wander along Main Street, where many of the old buildings house tempting duty-free shops, and join a culinary tour to sample traditional Caribbean dishes. St. Thomas has some of the best duty-free shopping in the world. As well as searching for duty-free bargains, shop for handmade leather sandals, rum, spicy sauces, and jewelry made from sea glass. On the island of St. John, browse through the shops in Cruz Bay to find local artisan crafts like wood carvings, Moko Jumbie dolls, jewelry, and natural soaps. We later discovered others who took the same excursion and sailed further afield through the same company.

It means that kids are not splashing in the pool and running down the corridors. We have the answers so your first  time will be nothing but smooth sailing. Our itineraries feature late stays and overnights, so you can explore it all from morning to night (and morning again).

Cruises to Antarctica Best Antarctica Cruises

cruise to antarctica

Weather at King George Island is very unpredictable, and with just one scheduled flight a day allowed, cancellations are very common. The Peninsula might look it’s ‘dirtiest’ though, with much of the ground snow melted. We’ve been travelling and working in Antarctica since 2017, first as photographers and content creators, then as tour guides taking our own groups to this beautiful part of the world. An Antarctic cruise means visiting a part of Earth that has remained largely unchanged since Aristotle first gave rise to the notion of Terra Australis, or the ”Land of the South”. Antarctica has two large indentations which are the Ross Sea and the Weddell Sea. The total surface of Antarctica is 14.2 Million square kilometres (about 5.5 million square miles) in summer.

What is it like travelling solo on a cruise to Antarctica?

Considered to be the pinnacle of best Antarctic tours is a trip that includes the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, often referred to as the ‘trio’. In all honesty, as amazing as Antarctica is, most people who visit South Georgia end up saying that this spectacular island is their real highlight of the trip. It’s known as one of the world’s greatest wildlife experiences, and has the price to match. Some Antarctica tours go to the eastern side of the Peninsula and enter the Weddell Sea, which promises a different experience again and is not often visited by travellers. If stepping foot on the Antarctic continent isn’t enough, you can become one of the 0.001% of the human population who will ever cross the fabled Antarctic Circle at 66º southern latitude. Just because it’s the most common tour doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing.

Antarctica Cruises & Tours

The length of Antarctica cruises vary quite a bit, with options ranging from a week right up to an entire month. Or get in touch with us for the best price possible with our current favourite operator, Quark Expeditions, even better than what they advertise to the public. And if you have some flexibility in your travel plans, there’s a big potential to lock in some remarkable last-minute deals. Smaller ships have much better manoeuvrability, which allows them to navigate through narrow channels and into tight bays to allow you to access Antarctica close up. Neither is better or worse, just something to consider based on your own style.

Antarctica cruise reviews

You wander down the gangway, strap a harness and rope to you, and literally jump off a perfectly good (and warm) ship into the icy water. If you want the ultimate bragging rights after your trip to Antarctica make sure you don’t miss the polar plunge. For those that are on a super tight schedule or really, really don’t want to cross the Drake, you can fly down to join your cruise to Antarctica.

Crossing the Antarctic Circle

cruise to antarctica

Our experienced Captain will continually monitor conditions to create the best possible itinerary for your adventure. You’ll spend an exciting 11 days busily exploring several of the many possible landing sites. Your adventure begins with an early morning flight to Ushuaia, where we'll meet your hybrid-powered expedition ship, specially designed for sustainable cruising in polar waters. This bustling port is the capital of Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego Province. Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Martial Glacier, Ushuaia vies for the title of the world’s southernmost city. Join your Expedition Team for ice-cruising activities, shore landings and fascinating lectures.

Hurtigruten Expeditions

With Antarctic regulations limiting landings to 100 people at a time, these ships only can land a small fraction of their passengers at any given time. Each of the ships has a polar class rating of PC 5 Category A (a notch above many Antarctica vessels), allowing them to travel through icy areas with ease. They're also loaded with observation areas for viewing the passing scenery. They carry kayaks, snowshoes and cross-country skis for polar exploring in addition to Zodiac boats for landings, and they have remotely operated vehicles -- just in case you want to see what's going on down below.

Itinerary

This line notably features late winter (Antarctica's late summer) sails -- a chance to see the region in a different season, with nesting penguins and returning whales. Let our experts take you deep into the heart of this majestic environment so it can get into yours. With no set itinerary in Antarctica, this voyage offers adventurous travellers the chance to experience Antarctica as it was meant to be – flowing with the wind, sea and ice, and taking the best opportunities Mother Nature provides. This voyage departs in the first half of the brief Antarctic summer, when sea ice is at its maximum – this offers us ample opportunities to explore in the icy wilderness of the last continent.

Feel the spray of water from the blow of a humpback whale on a Zodiac safari in Wilhelmina Bay. Wonder at awe-inspiring scenery on a ship cruise through the Lemaire Channel. Watch city-sized tabular icebergs drift silently past the ship in the Antarctic Sound.

The ‘Trio’ – Antarctica, South Georgia and Falkland Islands

Equipped with ice breaking capabilities, it's able to sail to polar areas that most other polar cruise vessels can't reach. Note that, currently, its Antarctica sailings are being mostly marketed by Ponant itself, which means they may draw mostly French-speaking travelers. Scenic Eclipse also was the first Antarctica-bound cruise vessel to boast helicopters to take passengers on epic (and pricey) Antarctica excursions -- and it has a submarine for underwater exploring, too. Having experienced a helicopter excursion from the vessel, I can say that it's truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For that reason, I am partial to the older but more intimate Hurtigruten polar vessel Fram, which carries just 200 passengers when operating in Antarctica.

Situated off the coast of Antarctica, Elephant Island is named after the elephant seals that populate it and due to the island being shaped like an elephant head. Rugged mountains, glistening sheets of ice and unique wildlife add to the mystique of this remote destination. Despite its seemingly unforgiving, yet hauntingly beautiful landscape, legions of tuxedoed-looking penguins waddle across the rocky terrain while giant elephant seals lounge on its shores.

You'll learn how to make your visit as safe and as low-impact as possible, and about the Citizen Science projects you can join. After a briefing from your Expedition Team, you’ll have time to settle into your cabin and explore the comforts and amenities on board. Why not consider arriving a few days early to see all this vibrant city has to offer, or explore the region with our optional Pre-Programme. The safety of our guests, our employees, and the communities we visit is our top priority.

The cost of an Antarctica cruise largely depends on the departure date, how long the cruise goes for, and the type of cabin you book on the ship but most cruises start from USD$4,500. Exploration didn't stop there though with a total of 17 major expeditions launched in the following years from 10 different countries, the last one being Ernest Shackleton's last ill-fated voyage in 1917. Antarctica was formed around 35 million years ago and remained undiscovered until around 1820 when Russian explorers spotted the mainland. However, this may have only been the first documented discovery of Antarctica, as it's believed that Pacific Islanders may have reached the white continent in 650 AD.

An HX trip includes everything from daily excursions and activities to our onboard Science Centre, meals, gratuities, drinks and more. Viking Octantis is designed to carry 378 passengers, which is on the high side for Antarctica cruise ships. Like Hurtigruten's Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen, it isn't able to land all or even most of its passengers at once in Antarctica. A pioneer in polar travel, Ponant has a long tradition of operating voyages to Antarctica, and this series of ship was specially designed for such trips. They all are hardy (with 1C ice class ratings from Lloyd's Register) but also stylish, with contemporary interiors and comfortable rooms.

Like Holland America, Princess has a long history of providing non-expedition, yet stunningly beautiful cruises to its guests in Alaska. That fact translates to expectations of a high-quality experience in Antarctica, therefore a high value for the price paid. Most Antarctic cruises begin and end in South American ports like Ushuaia or Buenos Aires. It’s truly an adventure, so approach it that way and you’ll enjoy the trip no matter where your ship ends up. Named after the first man to cross Antarctica and to reach the South Pole, MS Roald Amundsen leads the way towards an even more sustainable way of travelling. It serves as a comfortable base camp at sea – bringing adventurers from all over the world to the most spectacular destinations in the most sustainable way.

From mighty tabular icebergs in the Weddell Sea to far-flung shores south of the Antarctic Circle, every day brings jaw-dropping scenery, unforgettable landscapes, and incredible wildlife encounters. Get up close to whales, sea lions, elephant seals, and vibrant colonies of seabirds and penguins on numerous Zodiac excursions and landings, visit research stations, and immerse yourself in a true Antarctic adventure. In the Science Centre, at the heart of the ship, you’ll discover more about the places you sail to and listen to talks by the Expedition Team.

Alaska Cruise Lines Which Is Right For You?

People often say that a cruise ship sailing in Alaska is sailing through the “Inside Passage.” That refers to the famous coastal route vessels sail from Washington, through British Columbia, to Alaska. It's said that the sea is calm along this route because it closely borders the mainland on one side and islands on the other. We enjoyed sailing in this area with Alaskan Dream Cruises on a passenger ship with less than 75 people.

On a Seabourn voyage, passengers share the journey with scientists, naturalists, and others who expand the Alaskan experience with history, culture, and the natural world. Options include Denali (the tallest peak in North America), Glacier Bay (3.3 million acres of mountain, rainforests…and, and glaciers!), Kenai Fjords (home to 40 glaciers), and Wrangell-St. Guests can also book landtours before or after their voyage, where they can experience the vast wilderness of Alaska. Princess Cruises even has its own Princess Lodges as part of its combination packages.

Full of greenery, pubs and Victorian architecture, it's difficult to believe that this was a tent city full of rough and tumble miners just 150 years ago. On a cruise to Alaska, explore the Butchart Gardens, tour the pub scene and taste some of the local brews or sail the bay for a whale-watching adventure. Valdez is situated in Prince William Sound and serves as the gateway to the interior of Alaska.

Helicopters depart right along Skagway’s waterfront, so, depending on which of the three piers your cruise ship docks at, reaching the heliport will only involve a 5-to-15-minute walk from Skagway cruise port. For those with more time to work with, hopping aboard the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad is an incredible experience. The historic train can even pick up passengers at their cruise ship terminal. For those looking to take in Alaska’s stunning natural landscapes, hiking some of the famous Chilkoot Trail can be incredibly memorable. Luckily, some of the main trailheads are located just steps from Skagway cruise port.

Bears prowl rock-strewn beaches, while salmon-laden rivers rush through pristine, old-growth forest, bald eagles perched watchfully in the treetops. Remember swimwear for the ship; even if it’s cool outside, the Solarium on board is climate controlled and covered, so you can relax on a lounger in the warmth, and swim in the pool. When you’re packing for an Alaska cruise, you’ll want to plan for any kind of weather, from hot sun to ethereal mist and rain showers—often in the same day. Layers, light waterproof jackets, good walking shoes, and a hat and gloves are the essentials; Alaska can be cold as well as warm and sunny. The best time to visit Alaska is during its summer season, between May and September. Sail the Inside Passage, watching for bears foraging on stony beaches, or gaze in wonder at the towering, blue-white wall of the mighty Hubbard Glacier.

Cold temperatures, icy waters and a long snowy season are not conducive to early spring and late fall cruises. If you want to see landlocked areas, such as Denali National Park, you can tack a cruise line-operated tour onto the beginning or end of your sailing for a seamless land and sea vacation. It's easier than fumbling with multiple train, bus, ferry and hotel reservations to cobble together the same trip on your own. One of the key reasons to cruise Alaska versus taking a land tour is to visit destinations along the Inside Passage that you cannot reach by road. Most of Celebrity’s Alaska cruises sail round-trip from either Vancouver or Seattle. You could also opt for a one-way cruise between Vancouver and Seward or Vancouver and Seattle.

The cruise line also offers beloved live music programming, which I got to experience firsthand on a summer 2023 Alaska sailing. King's Blues Club, Billboard Onboard (a dueling piano bar), Lincoln Center Stage, and Rolling Stone Rock Room. After our shore excursions, we’d hop back on board the ship for drinks, dinner, and a nightcap at the dueling piano bar to jam out to hits from Billy Joel and Elton John. All of the above make HAL a popular pick among middle-aged and mature couples traveling without kids; however, onboard our summer sailing, I did notice quite a few small children traveling with their parents and grandparents.

Four years later, I still find myself dreaming of the delicious circular-shaped dessert known as “The World” — the perfect combo of peanut butter ganache, chocolate mousse, and salted caramel gelato). Many of the sailings to Alaska center on the state’s major ports of call, like Juneau and Sitka. There’s nothing wrong with those itineraries, but they do tend to focus more on touristy downtowns and less on the great outdoors. The ship and her 84 guests will be the only cruise ship in Glacier Bay National Park. Whale watching, farm-to-table meals, snowshoe and cross-country skiing, and heli-ski excursions are also on the schedule. There are also plenty of exciting outdoor activities just a short distance from Skagway’s downtown core.

ACL-American Cruise Lines introduces exclusive New England voyages in 2024

These assets were auctioned following the bankruptcy of AQV's parent company Hornblower Holdings. Indulge in a relaxing journey across the warm Pacific from Vancouver to the lush, volcanic islands of Hawaii, where waterfalls tumble from verdant peaks and the ocean is home to abundant whales and dolphins. Visit Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls from Hilo, and admire the fiery antics of Mount Kilauea.

Welcome to Memphis, a historic city which rises picturesquely up the hillside from the river, adorned with grand oak trees, lush parks, and historic sites that commemorate everything from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement. Immerse yourself in its rich musical legacy as you stroll along legendary Beale Street, where music flows from every doorway, and savor the rich flavors and aromas of the city’s famous BBQ. The new 10-night / 11-day cruise itinerary of the company (named "Grand New England") covers New England destinations, among which are charming islands and coastal towns located within the Northeast. Fares were inclusive of a pre-cruise hotel stay in New Orleans, daily excursions, onboard entertainment/meals/beverages/WiFi/tips/gratuities, all land transportation and hotels between the segments, all port charges. These boats have passenger capacity 170 and are sized slightly larger compared to ACL's old coastal cruisers. They are fully stabilized (active wing stabilizers by Rolls-Royce Marine) and have the USA river cruising industry's largest and most luxurious staterooms.

All this is yours, from the luxurious setting of one of our award-winning, contemporary ships. The Pacific Northwest produces some of the tastiest seafood and exquisite wines. From salmon to pinot noir grapes, our master chefs have curated a custom Columbia & Snake Rivers inspired menu to make your onboard experience even more special and personalized.

The line also recommends that passengers bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat, a rain jacket and a sweater for cool evenings (or to counter the air conditioning). One of several small ship lines that has staked out a claim on United States rivers, the Great Lakes and coastal waterways, American Splendor has been sailing the Mississippi since 2012. Launched in 2016 as America and given a revamp for the 2022 season, American Splendor is slightly larger than the line's other ships, with 185 passengers, but it features the same easygoing ambiance and attention to enrichment. The best strategy for packing for your New England cruise is layers, no matter what the season, so you can be prepared for a sudden change in weather. Be sure to bring layers that you can shed as the day warms up, perhaps a few light sweaters and a waterproof windbreaker for taking in the beautiful New England coastal views from the sun deck. The line said it reinforces the growing interest in small ship experiences.

American Cruise Lines' modern ships are a testament to premier nautical engineering, luxurious comfort, and the river cruising convenience. Our fleet of American riverboats, paddlewheelers, and small cruise ships offer the latest amenities, state-of-the-art navigation, and safety equipment. That's partly because the company has an all-American crew, with college kids making up the steward and deckhand staff. The line also doesn't nickel-and-dime with additional charges -- there's no casino, specialty restaurants or bar onboard, and the line includes a shore excursion in every port.

We take great pride in the generous size of our staterooms, which are the largest in the industry, ranging from 250 to 650 square feet. Each has an interior entrance allowing for unobstructed outside views of the breathtaking scenery of America.

Call ports include Bar Harbor ME, Belfast ME, Camden ME, Rockland ME, Boothbay Harbor ME, Bath ME. ACL's schedule 2024 groups 50+ itineraries across 35 US states, 19 vessels (ships and riverboats) and a total of 125 ports in the USA. The program features two new ports - Sag Harbor (Long Island NYC) and Washington DC. Traditionally for large-sized US riverboats, American Song has a fore-located boarding ramp (bow-location on Deck 1) that allows passengers to go ashore at any place along the ship's cruise itinerary route. The ramp has an innovative design being constructed as a retractable gangway (passenger bridge).

The decor, furnishings and art work will reflect the culture of the New England, Chesapeake Bay, and the Southeast where American Glory will sail. Sailing on the East Coast, the 109-passenger ship has been designed to offer "close-to-home" adventures that combine the atmosphere of an expedition cruise with the stability of a river cruising. As you cruise toward the vibrant city of Memphis, enjoy the beauty of the heart and the soul of the Mississippi Delta.

American Cruise Lines has always taken pride in building new ships and operating the world’s most modern fleet of small cruise ships and riverboats. Our well-appointed ships remain small by design and are a testament to both premier nautical engineering and luxurious comfort. The islands and harbors of New England and Maine are among the most desired summer vacation retreats.

ACL also provides shuttle bus services for its customers for land transportation to nearby attractions and popular downtown businesses. You will experience an authentic crab fest in Baltimore and delicious oysters in Charleston, but you will also taste exquisite cuisine onboard our ships. Our team of award-winning chefs locally sources ingredients with food that brings every region to life.

The redesigned boats were renamed "American Splendor" (fka America), "American Heritage" (fka Queen of the Mississippi) and "American West" (fka Queen of the West), and only American Pride retained its name. The refurb project was via partnership with Studio DADO (Miami-based interior design firm) which was commissioned for the American Melody's interior spaces. By this project (completed by March 2022), the ACL paddlewheelrs' staterooms, bars and lounges, dining rooms and public areas were completely redesigned, featuring new color schemes, artworks, furniture, carpets, textiles, accessories. Musicians, historians, and naturalists join every cruise, creating an entertaining onboard experience. Our cruises in this region focus heavily on southern history and culture, where even the most self-proclaimed history buffs will learn something new. These new ships, built at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Maryland, are a testament to premier nautical engineering and safety equipment, as well as state-of-the-art navigation.
